Nelson Academy Female Leadership

November 21, 2023

Here at Signal Hill Petroleum, we are not just an oil and gas company; we are community builders, educators, and advocates for future leaders. One of the many ways we express this commitment is by partnering with local schools. We want to extend a huge thank you to Nelson Academy for welcoming us back into their learning community for a third year in a row. Nelson Academy is a junior high school located here in Signal Hill, named after Signal Hill’s first Mayor, Jessie Elwin Nelson, in 1924. This presentation to a female leadership class truly aligns with the school’s roots by recognizing women in power.

Last Wednesday, our Community Relations Manager, Alex Carnino, and Regulatory Compliance Supervisor, Shannon Smith, had the opportunity to present to Nelson Academy’s 7th Grade Female Leadership class. To kick off the presentation, we brought along goodie bags filled with petroleum-based products. This icebreaker not only captured the students’ interest but also served as a tangible reminder of the role oil plays in our daily lives. Through this hands-on approach, the students gained a new perspective on the industry, understanding its pivotal role in powering our everyday activities.

Alex was able to share her experiences and knowledge within the Oil and Gas Industry, as well as offer advice for future female leaders. “I have loved being involved with the Female Leadership Academy over the last three years. It’s been a great experience showcasing the importance of our industry and sharing insights into my role as Community Relations Manager and our commitment to empowering the next generation. I take great pride in what I do, and I believe that inspiring young minds serves as a catalyst for positive change in our community,” said Alex Carnino, Signal Hill Petroleum’s Community Relations Manager.

As a female leader in a traditionally male-dominated industry, Shannon shared not only the challenges she has overcome but also the lessons learned along the way. “Growing up I always loved math and science and anytime anyone came to talk to me about the opportunity of STEM it really sparked my interest in this field. From that point I felt very passionate about exploring engineering. As I have developed into my role over the years, I am grateful to have the opportunity today to speak to and spark an interest in young future female leaders, said Shannon Smith, Signal Hill Petroleum’s Regulatory Compliance Supervisor.

Our collaboration with Nelson Academy exemplifies our dedication to fostering a positive and inspiring learning environment. SHP thanks Nelson Academy for having us, and we are looking forward to future opportunities.
