Signal Hill: Life at ‘the tops’
November 19, 2013On November 10th the Orange County Register wrote an article highlighting the history of Signal Hill including Signal Hill Petroleum’s role in developing Signal Hill.
“Signal Hill Petroleum came together just under 30 years ago with the acquisition of Shell properties in the area by founder Jerrel Barto and his friend Bruce Kerr. The faces of Barto and Kerr are sculpted in the “Tribute to the Roughnecks” statue that stands near Hilltop Park.
A block away is the Discovery Well, which is still producing oil, at the corner of Temple and Hill Street. The well was first to strike oil in the area in 1921 and launched an ambitious drilling program in the Long Beach Oil Field, which was said to give up 68 million barrels in 1923 alone. That’s a far cry from the company’s production today of 1 million barrels of oil a year, or about 3,300 a day, according to estimates provided by Slater.”
