2013 Solar Grand Prix

Signal Hill Petroleum was proud to have been a sponsor for Councilwoman Gerrie Schipske’s 2013 Solar Grand Prix event. The Solar Grand Prix exposes Long Beach Students grades 6-12 to solar and renewable energy sources while challenging them to work in teams, employ math and science, and to think creatively. 

The 2013 Solar Grand Prix included 67 student teams and more than 350 students in the Long Beach area.  Prior to the event, students built a model racing vehicle using a solar panel and gear kit.  Each team was given the same exact kit, but how they made the fastest vehicle is up to their creativity and design!

At the event I had the opportunity to meet the team we sponsored.  The team was consisted of four girls from St. Joseph’s Elementary School.  The girls were very appreciative for Signal Hill Petroleum’s sponsorship and I was very proud to see their make-shift solar powered racing vehicle take off on the track!
