Food for Kids at Grant Elementary School

May 31, 2013

Debra Russell (Signal Hill Petroleum Director Business Development & Community Relations) asked if I could help out with a local event here in Long Beach. Signal Hill Petroleum has sponsored the Blue Martini Ball benefiting Food for Kids. As a platinum sponsor, we were recognized today at Grant Elementary School. The elementary school had a school assembly where the Principal, Kim Baril, recognized Signal Hill Petroleum for our generous donation which benefits the majority of her students.

Grant elementary qualifies under Title 1 and must provide food Monday-Friday to its students. Title 1 is a great program, however several students only eat Monday- Friday, leaving them hungry over the weekend. The volunteer center, Food for Kids, provides food for the students for the weekend. Through Food for Kids, they provide 15 filled grocery bags for the 15 families each Friday morning to 5 Long Beach Elementary Schools. This great organization will provide food for approximately 375 individuals each weekend.

As a representative of SHP I was asked to say a couple of words. I said how proud SHP is of all of the students and went into the importance of education and furthering their education. I said SHP is grateful for the opportunity to help the students and we are truly thankful for Grant Elementary and programs like Food for Kids.
