SHP Helps Sponsors LB Solar Grand Prix
March 14, 2014Signal Hill Petroleum joined Councilwomen Gerrie Schipske and over 300 students, grade 6-12, in the citywide 5th annual Long Beach Solar Grand Prix, which was held Saturday March 8th at El Dorado Park. Local foods trucks, businesses, and CSULB Alpha Phi Omega volunteers were also in attendance for the spirited event! The students were assembled into 65 teams and were provided with a starter kit, which included a solar panel and motor. The challenge was to design and build a solar-powered model car with the fastest finish time on the track. Signal Hill Petroleum’s sponsorship and contribution helped in providing solar kits and supplies for participating students.
“It’s a great experience and an exciting event for the team members because they gain real world experience in the application of math, science and engineering skills,” said Councilwomen Schipske of the event. “The goal of this annual event is to inspire students to pursue careers in engineering and science and to explore careers with companies that focus on sustainability.”
